Called the “Korean Bell of Friendship”, this traditional building faces the Pacific Ocean on the coast of Los Angeles. I painted this on an extremely windy day with two friends. Our paint and brushes were flying away and we took shelter by some bushes and managed to finish our paintings! The location of the bell is for me a meaningful metaphor for Korean immigration and the Korean-American experience. The title “Across the Sea” refers to the figure on the right looking out over the Pacific, perhaps all the way home to Korea.
